Kevin R.I. All my teachings have left me knowing that Mindfulness is within each of us … 5 Days of listening to people who I believe live in / live Mindful based life, shows those of us unsure, that mindfulness is an intrinsic part of our nature ! I try to live a mindful life, By practicing daily to be fully aware paying attention,on purpose to the present moment, non judgmentally …. knowing what is on my mind ! Reinforcing this by a practice of Mindful Meditation . This is description of Mindfulness is borrowed from Jon Kabat Zinn . Through whom I was given my 1st. insight !

Hi i am Jackie & i live in Australia, to get out of these sessions to myself is to re-connect to commit my time to do a session each day. I need to lower my very high stress levels on all counts, to learn again how very powerful mindfulness is, to be compassionate for myself, to not keep going down the empty path & not keep going over ruminating issues. I do practice the breathing technique in bed before sleep, but i need to commit to so much more. I also like the idea of learning from home it makes things so much easier. Plus a big thank you for giving me this opportunity to partake in these sessions.

Hi there, I am a high school instructional technology teacher in Georgia, in the US. We have experienced a spike in the anxiety level of students over the past several years- perhaps in reaction to the standardization of education, increase in testing, labels like ‘below basic’ or ‘basic’, testing pressures, etc. I am curious to discover if growing our own empathy, compassion, and communication skills as teachers will inherently cultivate the same result in our students. It’s my deepest hope that my own children will have adults in their lives (aside from family) who appreciate their wonderfully weird personalities, quirks, and otherness. Can we teach our students how to become those adults?

Hi All. I am a teacher in Boulder and a friend and I signed up for this during a busy week of conferences. We were reflecting that we usually need mindfulness and meditation the most when we are busiest and stressed, but it doesn’t seem to come as easily doing these times either. With this course, we’re making a commitment to take some time out for ourselves.

Was is applied attachment thinking in schools, how is it related to mindfulness, is it a formal formula or process? Is it, if there iscan it here, buddhism based? I am a faithful live my faith and live in relationship with others, marraige and family provisionally certified therapist, and i have wondered many times how mindfulness does not mean to detach, when i feel so drawn to connect. What am i missing ? Lots of questions

I see that the vast majority of comments are from women. Though this is good, the people running the corporate world, and the military complex are mostly men. Men know the feelings of aggression, anger and sex with the rest of the feelings being at best vague impressions. I would hope this summit addresses the issue that mostly women meditate and not men. We need to find ways to fix this imbalance.

    Hello
My name is Kirsty and I am a mother of two beautiful children and work as a therapist in child and adolescent mental health in Northern Ireland. My intention is to improve my own self-compassion towards myself and in doing so, strengthen my ability to be generous with this to others, in particular the parents I work with. I have never ending compassion for children and young people but this can prove a little more challenging with the adults in these children’s lives…… This is my intention.

Hello from New Jersey! My name is Pam and I am currently the Principal of a PK – 4 school in central NJ. Previously I have been a Supervisor of Curriculum and Instruction; I have taught almost every grade level from K-8 and have worked as an educational consultant. I have been in the field of education for forty years and I still love learning new things and find that they keep me energized, current and they help sustain me. I am looking forward to this opportunity to strengthen my own mindfulness practice,

I have been working very hard to find some balance in my life and I am looking for ways to help bring mindfulness to the staff and students in my school, in a seamless way, so that it becomes part of our daily practice. Each year I see more and more anxiety in younger and younger children and am hoping that more mindfulness in schools will help these students.

I started meditating this summer and I have been reading and learning about being in the present.
It has taken me a long time to realize that I may not be able to control what happens around me, but I can always choose my response. The difficulty is in the timing…sometimes people just react and things do not go well, but taking a breath in the heat of the moment is not an easy task. I think the mantra, “It is what it is …” gives me a little time to choose my response.

I am grateful for any opportunity to increase my knowledge and experience.

Hi, My name is Terry and I live in Australia. Until recently , I was a Developmental Guidance Officer with Education Queensland. I tried for five years to introduce Mindfulness into various schools that I serviced, but was always met with resistance due to the pressures of NAPLAN (high-stakes testing) that has hijacked education in Australia for ten years: Teachers felt that even three minutes a day was an ‘imposition’ on their teaching time, even though they could see the many benefits of Mindfulness. I am psychotherapist and Clinical Counsellor with Level 4 registration (highest Level) with the Australian counselling Association (ACA); a Sandplay Practitioner; an ACT Therapist and accredited Mindfulness and Meditation Teacher (via Shamash Alidina in the UK: Teach Mindfulness) I have now started my own business and do not charge for my services because I want to give something back. Anyone wishing to keep-in-touch please feel free to do so. I wrote a program for schools that was fully supported by Shamash Alidina, but the schools I tried to convince to do it said it was too comprehensive and time-consuming!!!!

Over 30 years I have been numbed and I didn´t know it until I discovered that I could change how I felt by learning how to live in higher levels of consciousness. This process of learning allowed me to understand my trauma, how to learn a skill, be present, and stay connected to me, people, nature and sky.

Would you be willing to share the website or any resource when I could learn more about your learning program?

    Hi,

I’ve been teaching Mindfulness for over 20 years. While the feedback has been great, I’ve had very little experience teaching it to kids. In the last year, I’ve been asked whether I could offer courses to troubled teens. Another request was about bringing the practice to even younger kids. I’m hoping to gain additional tools and ideas to help me in this regard. I’ll also be offering Mindfulness to recent Syrian refugees where language will be a challenge. Perhaps similar tools will help me with this population.

Hello from a province in Mexico:
I am a certified Mindful Schools graduate with over 8 years of experience working with families and children, and 4 years of that working with schools and educators. For me the biggest challenge has been to maintain a regular practice in my everyday life in the context of busy work and family life. Also one of my biggest challenges has been to introduce such a novel concept to a culture that had never heard of it and that is very skeptical of “outside” ideas (not the case in a bigger urban place like Mexico City). To be remunerated fairly for it is even more challenging, but I am hoping to be a leader in my beloved country to change education for good!

It’s wonderful to see how world-wide this is reaching! I’m fighting to attain freedom from benzodiazepines after over 25 years of prescription use (no abuse). Doctor assisted, self directed tapering have cut my usage by 30% and that has taken a year and a half. Withdrawal is not an easy process! Mindfulness and meditation have, so far, kept the anxiety, if it’s there at all, to levels I can cope with. I’ve just gone through the trauma of losing everything in a fire and moving to an entirely new community and, to my surprise, I’m looking at it as a massive decluttering and a new start. I lived on the coast on the North Shore in Vancouver, BC, Canada and have now moved to the Fraser Valley. Maybe the most relevant point is that I’m in my 70s. The more I learn, the better it gets!

Bonjour from Eugene, Oregon. I’m a Pre-K teacher at a French immersion preschool and introduced the Kindness Curriculum last year with positive results. I have my own mindfulness practice, but am hoping to learn more about secular mindfulness in education and how I can quickly put anything I learn during the summit into practice for the benefit of my students. We’ve already had an amazing start to the year!

Buenos Dias from Samara Beach, Costa Rica. I have been interested in mindfulness and peacebuilding with young children for 23 years when I first learned about emotional intelligence from Daniel Goldman. I was so inspired that I started a PhD program and received a dissertation grant to research and write about Peacebuilding and Conflict Resolution in Preschool. My work was built upon some of the same foundations as Mark Greenberg’s work- Interpersonal Cognitive Problem Solving, which 4 year olds are capable of. Now I practice mindfulness with my T’ai Chi Chih practice and walking the beaches.

If you want to read the full dissertation, you need to search for it, perhaps dissertation abstracts or another library database you have access to:

Vestal, M.A. (2001) How Teacher Training in Conflict Resolution and Peace Education Influences Attitudes, Interactions and Relationships in Head Start Centers. (Doctoral dissertation. Nova Southeastern University, 2001). Dissertation Abstracts International.

If you can’t find it, I can send some selected chapters, but too large to send as a single doc.
        Kind Regards,

My school is following Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Successful people, and the idea of self care is central there…yet I haven’t learned to prioritize myself so I can better serve others, especially the precious 4 year olds I am blessed to learn from each day. I hope this is able to emphasize and put in my brain how central being mindful is.

Mindfulness is something I found naturally through being with Nature, of which we are a part, since childhood… since then I have more recently been discovering it as a named way of being, through talks, meeting like minded others, books and training as a Counsellor in Mindfulness based Person Centred practice. I have developed this further towards my own well being, however very much in compassion with Life, all sentient life, including participants of session I run, in the natural environment, or in ‘my’ counselling room in a homeless centre. I hope to learn more to pass onto those I journey alongside as well as to my own life and family. It has been precious, a gift, especially to some in such trauma that I meet. Thank you.

I have PA (psoriatic arthritis) that has begun to create changes in my body that I would like to combat with Mindfulness, not more medication.
In addition, our eldest son is a double, back-to-back TBI (traumatic brain injury) survivor and I’d like to pass what I learn here to him (if he’s willing) and, hopefully, the rest of my family. We could all use a more mindful approach our lives. 😉

I have been using Mindfulness in my classroom for several years. Combining Alternative Seating and Mindfulness, my students really reap the benefits. I started to incorporate Mindfulness activities at my weekly meetings with my teachers. They are taking these exercises to their own classrooms. I would like to enrich myself further and hope to learn more about the topic.

Hi – I’m a 68-year-old grandmother in Ontario, Canada who is the primary caregiver of my 8-year-old granddaughter who is struggling to cope with attachment trauma. I was introduced to mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) two years ago to help deal with family stresses and chronic back pain from congenital spinal malformation. I strongly believe that mindfulness can help in all aspects of our lives. I “live” mindfully, but know that a formal practice is necessary to fully experience all the benefits it offers. I’ve been pleased to see that the Child and Youth worker in our school actively works with mindfulness and my granddaughter’s 3rd grade teach is now incorporating it into her classroom’s curriculum. I want to strengthen my personal mindfulness and encourage my granddaughter to use it also. I am so pleased to see individuals from so many different countries. If everyone embraced mindfulness in their lives our entire world would be a much better place for all of us. Thank you for the opportunity to be involved in this summit.

I am currently attending school to obtain a degree in psychology. The reason for this is because I had a terrible upbringing and I would like to show and teach our “at risk” children that they too can come out stronger and better even if they are going through a horrible situation. I am a survivor of incest and was physically and verbally abused by my mother. However, what happened to me, does not define me. There are many, many children suffering in silence, such as I did. I want to be the one who gives them hope and guides them in the right direction.

Hi i live in Australia, i am retired because of disability reasons, i have done mindfulness at our university for a 8 week course for back pain which was offered and i was fortunate to be on the program, at first i was not getting the meaning or i should say i was a bit of a disbeliever, but around the middle of the 8 weeks, something clicked and from there on i was surprised at after doing this 2 sessions a day, a 20 & 45 minute sessions every day, well when i started the course my pain level was 10+ at the end my pain level was down to around 2 to 3 score. i was amazed. But life gets in the way & i stopped doing it as often to stopping full stop. Now i want to reconnect so i can become more calm and have self compassion to regain a sense of purpose in myself. thanks everyone for the opportunity, i will commit wholeheartedly

Hi I’m looking forward to joining the summit from Billericay, Essex UK. I’m a counsellor and since bringing mindfulness into my practice myself and my clients have benefitted more now than ever before. I practice daily and it’s helped me with many issues. I want to keep learning more and spreading the word. My hope is for everyone to be more mindful with compassion.

I’m the Founding Director of the Stress Management & Prevention Center, LLC, in Cathedral City, California. I had the distinct honor of taking the MBSR course back in the early 1980w from Jon Kabat-Zinn and Saki Santorelli at the UMASS School of Medicine, where I was Director of Immunohematology Research. They changed my life forever. As a result, I resigned from the medical school Since then I have dedicated myself to mindfulness meditation and living mindfully from moment to moment. Without mindfulness I would not have been able to cope with my bipolar disorder, the PTSD from the Vietnam conflict, and the sexual abuse I experienced from an uncle early in life. I am now a Certified Yoga Instructor, a Life Coach, a Trauma-Healing Yoga Instructor, and Meditation Teacher. Jaime Carlo-Casellas, Ph.D.

Hi Jaime, thank you for sharing your story. It is inspirational.

Learning how to bring self-awareness to my daily life helped me to replace my feeling of being abused, guilty and shamed into connection and presence. Mindfulness helped me to cultivate a new state of mind, to create a choice and become resilient.

I also decided to start a new professional journey and I am still working on that. I want to share my story to help people to feel free, happy and worthy. Now I know that it is possible to live a calm and better life by learning how to live in high levels of consciousness.

      Thank you for sharing!

      Leo
